Joseph Ware Tapp part 3 1870s

Joseph Ware Tapp 1870s

1870 age 13

Brother Alfred Castle Tapp was born on 23 May 1870 in Penn, Stark County Illinois.
Remember last post where I indicated that brother Henry A. Tapp was born 1869?  Well, when we look at the actual census image, rather than the index, we find that his age is 1/12 -- he was one month old when the census was taken in June 1870.  Therefore he was born May 1870.  Now, after this census, there is NO OTHER record for him, none at all.  However, we pick up with the 1880 census showing the youngest boy, Alfred C. Tapp age 10.  Why different names?  Sometimes the census taker doesn't hear the name, writing it down wrongly.  Or, the family had a provisional name, but changed it to Alfred Castle Tapp.

I always wondered about the middle name Castle.  Perhaps it is the mother's name somewhare up the line.  Interestingly, in Toulon, there was a family with the last name of Castle.  Hmmm.  Anyway, he married Mabel Adelman in 1893 in Stark County Illinois, died in Iowa.  His Find a Grave memorial is here.

By the way, at least one woman used her connection through Alfred Castle Tapp to connect with Revolutionary soldier and thereby gaining admission into the Daughters of the American Revolution -- DAR.  Since he is brother of my great grandfather Joseph Ware Tapp, that should mean I am also eligible to join.

Sister Martha Ellen Tapp died in Wyoming, Stark County Illinois on 4 June 1870.  She was only 20 years old.  Why did she die?  Why in a different place of residence?  I found her last in a census 1870, living with her husband Franklin Pratt and his family.  It isn't clear that she was married at the time, but she is listed after the 8 year old son.  The Find A Grave memorial for Franklin Pratt includes information that presumably came from a newspaper about Mrs. Franklin Pratt.  She died suddenly.  Was she pregnant?  Did she come down with Sepsis?  or a blood clot?  If she was pregnant, was it Eclampsia?  I can't find anything about her death so far.  If you have anything, give me a hollar using the form on the right (Ancestry -- Martha Ellen Tapp, 2018).

In 1876, Hayes was elected president in one of the most contentious elections in national history.  He lost the popular vote to Democrat Samuel J. Joseph Ware Tapp part 1

Joseph Ware Tapp 1857-1924 Part 1 -- 1850s

1850-1856

Before he was born, there were underground railroad leading slaves to freedom.  These ended about 1860 when Joseph was age 3.  Also, Queen Victoria was the monarch of England (OurTimelines.com, 2018)

1857

March 6, just before Joseph Ware Tapp was born, the US Supreme Court decided that Blacks could not be US citizens (OurTimelines.com, 2018).  They decided that slaves living in free states and territories were not free just because of residence, because “he was not considered a person under the US constitution.  In the opinion of the justices, black people were not considered citizens when the Constitution was drafted in 1787 (History.com Editors, 2009).”  This was one catalyst leading to Civil War.

James Buchanan was President until Joseph was three years old

 (Wikipedia -- Buchanan, 2018)

James Buchanan, 15th President of the United States, from 1857-1861, just prior to the Civil War.  Democrat; Secretary of State, Senator and Representative before becoming President (Wikipedia -- Buchanan, 2018)
The test of leadership is not to put greatness into humanity, but to elicit it, for the greatness is already there (Buchanan,  2018)

1857 Birth

Joseph Ware Tapp mini pedigree
from Ancestry.com

Joseph Ware Tapp was born in Toulon, Stark County Illinois, on May 1st to Bushrod and Mary Jane Essex Tapp.  I cannot find ANY birth record other than from census records.  I’m not sure there are any birth records available.  His middle name, Ware, came from his grandmother Eleanor Ware, daughter of Scottish-born Robert and Catherine Maxwell Ware.  Joseph was the 6th child born, with older siblings Sarah Elizabeth, Martha Ellen, George Washington, James Whitfield and Charles Wesley Tapp.  He was smack in the middle of twelve children.

Social things that may have affected the Tapp family include that the Transatlantic cable was started this year  According to Wikipedia,
transatlantic telegraph cable is an undersea cable running under the Atlantic Ocean used for telegraph communications. The first was laid across the floor of the Atlantic from Telegraph Field, Foilhommerum Bay, Valentia Island in western Ireland to Heart's Content in eastern Newfoundland. The first communications occurred August 16, 1858, reducing the communication time between North America and Europefrom ten days – the time it took to deliver a message by ship – to a matter of minutes. Transatlantic telegraph cables have been replaced by transatlantic telecommunications cables

Some other famous men who were born the same year include Lord Baden-Powell who founded Boy Scouts; Clarence Darrow of the Scopes Trial fame; and William H. Taft, President (OurTimelines.com, 2018).

1858 - 1859 age 1 - 2

In other news -- England transfers governmental responsibility to India; Darwin published his book Origin of the Species; Minnesota enters the union as the 32nd state; Oregon becomes the 33rd state (OurTimelines.com, 2018).

Well!  I found ONE city directory for 1950, for his parents.  Was he still living with them?  I think so, but it won't be until the 1950 census is released to the public before I can find out.  However, he didn't marry until he was 40 years old, so I think he may well have still lived with them?

Marriage to Mary V. Hunter Tapp, 14 April 1961, Orange California, according to the California Marriage Index, 1960-1985 found on Ancestry.com.  Charles was 40 years old, Mary was 27.  How did they meet?  What made them decide to marry?

1962 age 42

A little over a year after their marriage, his father Harry Bushrod Tapp died, 1 September 1962, in Peoria Illinois.

1974, age 54

I suspect that he had his mother Clara live with him after the death of his father.  His mother died when he was 54 years old.  She was living in Orange, Orange County California, according to her obituary.  Charles is living in Hemet, Riverside California.  Clara died 17 June 1974.

Charles A. Tapp, son of Harry Bushrod Tapp 1 1920s

This one is actually my Tapp.  He is first cousin to my mother, making him my First Cousin Once Removed.  This is the first installment.  If you are related, be sure to contact me using the form on the right.

  • 1921 birth of sister martha May Tapp

  • 1926 birth of brother Harry Earl

Charles Alfred Tapp mini-pedigree
from Ancestry.com

1920

Charles Alfred Tapp is born to Harry Bushrod and Clara Frances Ahrendt Tapp.  The only proofs I have are secondary sources, Censuses, Marriage, death and public records.  And FindaGrave.  Which is totally proof, right?  No, it is probably at best a tertiary source since people enter this information themselves.  I did a couple of searches, delineated below.  All of which mean I don't have a primary birth record.

  1. Google Search for
    1. Charles Alfred Tapp birth 1920
      1. The photos are out of context, so I'm gonna skip them for now.
      2. Weird Vintage Ad
      3. Lots of results of separated items in the search, such as Alfred Tapp, or just 1920.  Lets try this differently, by putting quotations around "Charles Alfred Tapp" which forces the search engine to look for all three names together.  It may limit my results by dropping the "Charles Tapp" and "Charles A. Tapp" but I can look for those in a different search.
    2. "Charles Alfred Tapp" by itself; Tapp Genealogy; Tapp Family
      1. Nothing. Either nothing at all, or too many rabbit holes to burrow through.
  2. Ancestry.com Search
    1. Found no new information, other than what I already have on my Charles Alfred Tapp profile
  3. MooseRoots.com Search
    1. I couldn't access them because they have an overlay asking me to block my ad blocker from blocking their ads. Wha-AT?
  4. Find A Grave Search
    1. found Charles Tapp 1882-1959 buried in California, Memorial ID 85530568.  As far as I know, he is not related
    2. Charles Alfred Tapp 1920-1997, FAG memorial 94552117.  More details below
    Weird Vintage Ad
  5. MyHeritage.com website.  I have a financial problem with MyHeritage. They expect money to get to the good stuff, but I already pay for Ancestry and Fold3, I just cannot bet behind another charge.  If I spend more money, it will be for Newspapers.com.  Just my humble opinion, subject to change if and when MyHeritage improves their content. FYI, you can tell if it is paid content by looking at the hyperlinked things.  If it says simply "name of parents, place of birth" then you don't have access unless you pay through the nose.  Just sayin'.
    1. Census results are locked off
    2. The Social Security Death Index is all free, and there are over 7,000 results for Charles Tapp.  Now, this may include Topp, Taup, and various other spellings.
      1. Clicking on the SSDI link for my Charles A. Tapp, we get his index, details below.  It also includes some related records.  Let's see if I have access to these, shall we?
        1. Nope, no access for free membership for the 1930 census, 1940 census, public records, California Death.
What Does Baby Weigh 026_550
    1. Biographical summaries of Notable People has a Charles Tapp, Television Producer.  Nope
    2. BillionGraves.com portion of this website has a couple of Charles Tapp burials in New Zeland.  Hmm, his wife is Grace Eleanor Tapp, interesting, but nope.
    3. The MyHeritage family tree portion of the search showed many Charles Alfred Tapp and Topp entries.  Only one is my Charles Alfred
      1. This entry has some information which I will include below in the proper spots.
    4. FamilySearch.com for Charles Alfred Tapp
      1. From this profile, I can search four websites, Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and FamilySearch.  This profile sometimes includes hints which I can review and add or reject.  Many times, like today, it is information I've already included in my Ancestry profile, but I review and add to FamilySearch because it syncs with Legacy software.

The family moved to Pontiac, Oakland, Michigan.  What took them to Michigan?  Was it to work in a plant?  Was it because they were still suffering from the Tri-State Tornado?  Well, actually, he probably went to earn money by working in the automotive industry.  Details in the next post.
