This is another great census for information. We find our family with three children missing. It was a practice for them to send the girls to work as domestic servants. I think this is the case for Sadie and Clara. Harry I am still working on. Hold, please ....

Okay, yes, I found Harry. He is 17 years old, working as a hired hand on a Reyburn farm. His name was indexed poorly, as Taupp. Since Reyburn is a maternal grandmother maiden name, these are probably cousins he works for.

Sadie, in 1910, is working as a servant for the Albert Hanover family. She is 19 years old, working in Bloomington Illinois as a housekeeper.

Clara is age 15, working as a servant for the James Riley family in Randolph, McLean County, Illinois

How did these girls find these positions? They were quite young. Did they advertise for a position, or did they answer an advertisement? Was the position found by word of mouth? Did Joseph and Laura interview the family before sending their little girls off? I suspect, Momma Laura trained her girls to work hard and to live honestly. There was no helicopter parenting in this time. These girls were considered old enough to make their way in the world. And they all did very well.

Forepaugh's circus was the first to have a separate big top tent for the menagerie. Performing in places as famous as Madison Square Garden, the show and its exotic features were wildly popular until it performed its last tour in 1911 (Ancestry.com Historical Insights, 2019).

He served from 1913 to 1921. He was a Democrat, President of Princeton University, and New Jersey Governor. He lead the US during World War I (Wikipedia -- Wilson, 2018)

Historical Insight -- Great Lakes Storm of 1913

In 1913, Joseph Ware Tapp was living in Randolph, Illinois when a devastating storm furiously slammed the Great Lakes. Hurricane-force winds of 90 miles-per-hour, towering waves over 35 feet, and whiteout blizzard conditions inundated the Great Lakes between November 7 and November 10, 1913 (Historical Insights -- Great Lakes Storm of 1913, 1913).

Death of sister Isadore Tapp, Sand Prairie, Tazewell County, Illinois.

She died 4 February 1917. She had been married to Wilbur Campbell, had three daughters and two sons. Her Find a Grave memorial, created by Roberta Everett in 2007, can be found here.

Historical Insight -- America Enters World War I

When the United States declared war on Germany in 1917, Joseph Ware Tapp was probably living in Randolph, Illinois. President Wilson's speech to Congress was published across the United Sates. On April 6, 1917, he asked that "all officers, civil or military, of the United States that they exercise vigilance and zeal in the discharge of the duties incident to such a state of war" (Ancestry Historical Insights, 2019).

While some Americans criticized President Wilson for going back on his promise to remain neutral, most eagerly put their backs into the war effort, supporting the four and a half million American soldiers who served in Western Europe (Ancestry Historical Insights, 2019).

1940 Census, age 19

1940 Census for Charles Tapp's family

Charles Alfred Tapp is here, although you wouldn't know it at first glance. It is indexed as "Alfred Gapp." He is 19 years old, born about 1921, the son of Harry and Clara "Gapp." I think the census taker was lazy. Just look at all the errors -- Charles Warren is written as Warren Gapp. Charles has only his middle name written. Joseph is simply "Joe." Both grandchildren are written as Henry's children. Anyway, he lives in 810 E. Chestnut Street, Bloomington, McLean, Illinois, the same house as he lived in in 1935. This is a farm, he's finished his first year of High School, and he works as a farm hand. The extended family includes sister Mary Tapp Milhone and her husband Charles, and daughter Deloris; sister Martha Tapp Gordon and her husband Robert and son Robert. Also living with them is Charles' cousin Bertha Salzman.

Well, there is no picture of this house on Google street view. As you can see, there are no blue lines. Nobody drove the mapping van down this little street. I also tried to find information from Zillow to see when the house was built, but there is no information. At. All. Nothing to see here, move along.

This is what the house looks like today. I couldn't find out when it was built, but it looks about the right era. So, it housed four adults and four sub-adults, according to the directory

Due for Induction. This could be my Charles A. Tapp, son of Harry Bushrod and Clara Ahrendt Tapp. They lived in Bloomington Illinois at this time. And the age is about right. I feel comfortable enough with this possibility that I will include it in this blog as long as you, dear reader, are aware that I am not fully sure this is my man. I can't, however, add it to my Ancestry.com profile. Not yet, however.

Here's a thought. It may be possible that I have included at least one other non-related Charles A. Tapp. Either that, or this Tapp family moved around a lot within Bloomington. If you have any ideas, please let me know. It can get confusing at times.

Randolph Township History Gardner Randolph settled here in 1823, the year following the Dawson-Hendrix settlement at Blooming Grove. Randolph spent his later life and died in California. Other settlers who joined Randolph in the 30's were Jesse Funk, Capt. John Karr of Revolutionary fame, the Rust family, the Nobles, Stewarts, the Wakefields and VanOrdstrands.Many mills were set up in this township along the Kickapoo creek. HeyworthThe village of Heyworth [Randolph Township] was laid out by Campbell Wakefield in 1858 and incorporated in 1869.The town has become one of the best in the county, with paved streets, many business houses, excellent schools, churches and lodges. LytlevilleJohn Baldwin was founder of the village of Lytleville [in Randolph Township], which once aspired to be the county seat. Grace and her sister Olive passed seventh and eighth grade exams. They lived in Bloomington.

If they lived in the north part of Randolph Township, the school in Bloomington would be about 4-5 miles away from home.

Historical Insight -- Women Gain the Constitutional Right to Vote

Ratification of the 19th Amendment in August 1920 was the culmination of several decades of work by woman suffrage organizations.

“The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.” To gain this brief addition to the U.S. Constitution in August 1920, woman suffrage movement leaders had met for 72 years to discuss their goal of gaining full voting rights throughout the United States. There were victories during this quest. Wyoming granted full suffrage to women in 1869, and every state from the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific Coast had extended full voting rights to women before 1920. When the 19th Amendment was ratified, only seven states remained where women had no voting rights at all. In the 1920 election, women did not vote as a political bloc, and a New York Times report estimated that one-third of the eligible female voters in the state cast ballots in the presidential election.
