Joseph Ware Tapp part 6 1900s

Joseph Ware Tapp 1900s

1900

Census, La Prairie, Marshall County, Illinois

Joseph Ware Tapp 1900 La Prairie, Marshall IL

This family is the fourth family on this set.  No street, no house number.  This was a working farm.  I love the 1900 census because we get month and year of birth, how many years married, and how many children born, and how many are still living.  We can see that Laura Tapp had just the five children so far, with all of them living.  They are in La Prairie Township in Marshall County, had moved here from West Toulon, Stark County Illinois sometime since the last available census 20 years ago.

Google Maps, Toulon to La Prairie IL

According to Google Maps directions 2019, we can see it is less than a 30 minute drive.  So, not too far away.

He served from 1901 to 1909.  His face is on Mount Rushmore.  He is generally ranked as one of the five best presidents (Wikipedia -- Roosevelt, T., 2018).

Birth of son Glenn Reyburn Tapp

2 January 1905, Glenn Reyburn Tapp was born in Albert City, Buena Vista, Iowa.  He was the eighth child.  Was Laura pregnant when they moved to this area?  They moved sometime between mid-summer of 1900 when the Federal Census was taken, and January 1905 when Baby Glenn was born.  His middle name, Reyburn, was his maternal grandmother's maiden name, Sarah Ann Reyburn Watkins Swope.  Glen married twice, had four daughters, and died in 1977 in Beloit, Rock County Wisconsin.  Glenn's Ancestry profile is here.  His Find a Grave memorial created by Alice Wehmhoener in 2010 is here.  It is also an orphaned memorial for which I will request to manage until a more suitable manager comes along.

State Census, Fairfield, Buena Vista County, Iowa

Not much information added except we know where they lived in 1905, their post office was Albert City, and we know the names of their children.  Glenn was still an infant, since he was born this year.  The first is an image of the actual census.  The second is an index found on Ancestry.com

Wonder what took them so far away from home?  What was going on in Illinois that they needed to find a farming job way out west?  For Joseph Ware Tapp was an tenant farmer.  He never owned his own land that I am aware of, but he farmed land owned by others.  I don't know if he was very good, but his children all looked healthy and happy.

William Howard Taft becomes the 27th President of the United States

He was the 10th Chief Justice of the US, the only person to have held both offices.  The vice president became president when Theodore Roosevelt was assassinated, and was deveated by Woodrow Wilson after splitting the Republican Party by running as a third party candidate (Wikipedia -- Taft, 2018).

Joseph Ware Tapp part 3 1870s

Joseph Ware Tapp 1870s

1870 age 13

Brother Alfred Castle Tapp was born on 23 May 1870 in Penn, Stark County Illinois.
Remember last post where I indicated that brother Henry A. Tapp was born 1869?  Well, when we look at the actual census image, rather than the index, we find that his age is 1/12 -- he was one month old when the census was taken in June 1870.  Therefore he was born May 1870.  Now, after this census, there is NO OTHER record for him, none at all.  However, we pick up with the 1880 census showing the youngest boy, Alfred C. Tapp age 10.  Why different names?  Sometimes the census taker doesn't hear the name, writing it down wrongly.  Or, the family had a provisional name, but changed it to Alfred Castle Tapp.

I always wondered about the middle name Castle.  Perhaps it is the mother's name somewhare up the line.  Interestingly, in Toulon, there was a family with the last name of Castle.  Hmmm.  Anyway, he married Mabel Adelman in 1893 in Stark County Illinois, died in Iowa.  His Find a Grave memorial is here.

By the way, at least one woman used her connection through Alfred Castle Tapp to connect with Revolutionary soldier and thereby gaining admission into the Daughters of the American Revolution -- DAR.  Since he is brother of my great grandfather Joseph Ware Tapp, that should mean I am also eligible to join.

Sister Martha Ellen Tapp died in Wyoming, Stark County Illinois on 4 June 1870.  She was only 20 years old.  Why did she die?  Why in a different place of residence?  I found her last in a census 1870, living with her husband Franklin Pratt and his family.  It isn't clear that she was married at the time, but she is listed after the 8 year old son.  The Find A Grave memorial for Franklin Pratt includes information that presumably came from a newspaper about Mrs. Franklin Pratt.  She died suddenly.  Was she pregnant?  Did she come down with Sepsis?  or a blood clot?  If she was pregnant, was it Eclampsia?  I can't find anything about her death so far.  If you have anything, give me a hollar using the form on the right (Ancestry -- Martha Ellen Tapp, 2018).

In 1876, Hayes was elected president in one of the most contentious elections in national history.  He lost the popular vote to Democrat Samuel J. Tilden but he won an intensely disputed electoral college vote after a Congressional commission awarded him twenty contested electoral votes.  The result was the Compromise of 1877, in which the Democrats acquiesced to Hayes' election on the condition that he withdraw remaining US troops protecting Republican office holders in the South, thus officially ending the Reconstruction era. -- (Wikipedia -- Hayes, 2018)
