1870 age 13

Brother Alfred Castle Tapp was born on 23 May 1870 in Penn, Stark County Illinois.

Remember last post where I indicated that brother Henry A. Tapp was born 1869?  Well, when we look at the actual census image, rather than the index, we find that his age is 1/12 -- he was one month old when the census was taken in June 1870.  Therefore he was born May 1870.  Now, after this census, there is NO OTHER record for him, none at all.  However, we pick up with the 1880 census showing the youngest boy, Alfred C. Tapp age 10.  Why different names?  Sometimes the census taker doesn't hear the name, writing it down wrongly.  Or, the family had a provisional name, but changed it to Alfred Castle Tapp.

I always wondered about the middle name Castle.  Perhaps it is the mother's name somewhare up the line.  Interestingly, in Toulon, there was a family with the last name of Castle.  Hmmm.  Anyway, he married Mabel Adelman in 1893 in Stark County Illinois, died in Iowa.  His Find a Grave memorial is here.

By the way, at least one woman used her connection through Alfred Castle Tapp to connect with Revolutionary soldier and thereby gaining admission into the Daughters of the American Revolution -- DAR.  Since he is brother of my great grandfather Joseph Ware Tapp, that should mean I am also eligible to join.

Sister Martha Ellen Tapp died in Wyoming, Stark County Illinois on 4 June 1870.  She was only 20 years old.  Why did she die?  Why in a different place of residence?  I found her last in a census 1870, living with her husband Franklin Pratt and his family.  It isn't clear that she was married at the time, but she is listed after the 8 year old son.  The Find A Grave memorial for Franklin Pratt includes information that presumably came from a newspaper about Mrs. Franklin Pratt.  She died suddenly.  Was she pregnant?  Did she come down with Sepsis?  or a blood clot?  If she was pregnant, was it Eclampsia?  I can't find anything about her death so far.  If you have anything, give me a hollar using the form on the right (Ancestry -- Martha Ellen Tapp, 2018).

In 1876, Hayes was elected president in one of the most contentious elections in national history.  He lost the popular vote to Democrat Samuel J. Tilden but he won an intensely disputed electoral college vote after a Congressional commission awarded him twenty contested electoral votes.  The result was the Compromise of 1877, in which the Democrats acquiesced to Hayes' election on the condition that he withdraw remaining US troops protecting Republican office holders in the South, thus officially ending the Reconstruction era. -- (Wikipedia -- Hayes, 2018)

Mary Jane Tapp was the seventh child born about 2 weeks before the census takers came round.  She was named after her mother, Mary Jane Essex Tapp.

Starting at line 15, we see Bushrod Tapp age 40, who looks like he's working as a grocer.  Honestly, I had thought the family were farmers for all time!  His real estate is worth $330 while his personal estate is worth just about the same.  We see that he was born in Virginia.  His wife Mary J. Tapp is age 33 and also born in Virginia.  The children were all born in Illinois.  So, the kids are Sarah E.; Martha E; George W.; Charles W.; Joseph age 3 and Baby Mary who is actually less than a month old.

The next house down we find William and Belinda Johnson.  Belinda is actually Bushrod's sister.  If you look above at line 8, we find Judith Tapp age 63 and her son Richard.  She is Bushrod's mother Judith Basye Tapp.  I'm pretty sure I'd read that he'd had a brain fever which adled his brain.  He required help to live.  He lived with his mother for the most part, and by the 1900 census he was an inmate in the Stark County Almshouse.  I feel sorry for him, it must have been very hard.

The dreary October weather in Galesburg, Illinois, didn’t deter the masses from traveling to Knox College—about 15,000 huddled together to hear Republican Abraham Lincoln and Democrat Stephen A. Douglas. It was the fifth of seven public debates the senatorial candidates had agreed to, and the series deeply inspired the people of the state. At the Charleston debate, a four-mile parade of supporters greeted the candidates, and thousands gathered on blankets with their picnic baskets. Although the candidates would be chosen by the legislature, not the people, the topics covered in the heated discussions were of great interest to everyone—the issue of slavery in particular drew many citizens from neighboring states. Stenographers from Chicago newspapers reported detailed accounts to a whole nation reading on with bated breath. Though Lincoln’s views on slavery lost him the senatorial election, they would ultimately win him the presidential election just two years later in 1860. 

In other news -- The Rifled barrel is first invented (OurTimelines.com, 2018).  According to Wikipedia, "Barrel rifling was invented in Augsburg, Germany in 1498.  In 1520 August Kotter, an armourer of Nuremberg, Germany improved upon this work.  Though true rifling dates from the mid-16th century, it did not become commonplace until the nineteenth century."

During the American Civil War, Northerners banded together to support the cause of the Union and the soldiers who fought for it. – Ancestry.com Historical Insight

In 1861 President Abraham Lincoln called the American Civil War “a people’s contest,” a cause that had to be taken up by all: men, women, and children. Citizens in the 23 northern states loyal to the Union took his words to heart and threw themselves into the war effort. One aid organization for children raised $16,000 by selling portraits of President Lincoln door to door, while women organized sewing bees to make uniforms. For the men who stayed home, the draft was a hot topic; several draft riots took place in major cities like New York and Boston, where recruiters and military personnel were beaten to death. Just one year into the war, the financial burden began to take its toll as well when the U.S. Congress enacted the first income tax law. However, with encouragement from their President, Northerners pushed onward, supporting the cause of the Union. Death of sister Mary Jane Tapp

Poor infant girl, she was barely ten months old when she died.  I don't have any death record for her other than a Find a Grave memorial.  I wonder why she died?  Was it in some way related to the beginning hardships of living in the Civil War?  There is no photo of the tombstone, but a notation indicates the marker is on the same stone as her parents Bushrod and Mary Jane Tapp.  Their stone is a large monolith so it is possible.

Abraham Lincoln was the 16^th President from 1861 to his assassination April 1865.  “Lincoln led the nation through the Civil War, its bloodiest war and its greatest moral, constitutional, and political crisis.”  In doing so, he preserved the Union, abolished slavery, strengthened the Federal government and modernized the economy (Wikipedia -- Lincoln, 2018).

"It is rather for us here dedicated to the great task remaining before us, that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion" -- Abraham Lincoln (Lincoln, 2018).





How did this presidency affect the Tapp family?  I imagine they were proud of a fellow Illinoisian.  Did they listen to his speeches?



In other news -- The TransContinental Telegraph is completed.  According to the History channel, the workers of the Western Union Telegraph Company linked the eastern and western tlegraph networks of the nation at Salt Lake City, Utah.  This was the first time one could have instant communication between Washington DC and San Francisco CA.  "The chief justice of California sent the first transcontinental telegram to President Abraham Lincoln, predicting that the new communication link would help ensure the loyalty of the western states to the Union during the Civil War (History.com Editors -- Transcontinental Telegraph, 2018)

In other news -- The Apache Nation declares war on the United States (how did this affect the Tapp family?); Colorado, North Dakota and South Dakota all organize as territories, while Kansas enters the Union as the 34th state as a free state.  According to History.com "the struggle between pro-and anti-slave forces in Kansas was a major factor in the eruption of the Civil War" (History.com Editors -- Kansas, 2018).  The Confederate States of America organizes, and exists until 1865, and the entire country was in turmoil because of the Civil War (OurTimelines.com, 2018).

Birth of brother and sister, twins Theodore B Tapp and Isadore Tapp in Toulon, Stark County Illinois

Again, no official birth records are available, we have death records and census records and other tertiary sources.  I wonder if there is a family bible out there somewhere?  Wouldn't that be nice to have an image of that?  Heavy Sigh 

Theodore B. Tapp lived in Illinois and Nebraska, dying in Iowa and is buried there.  He'd married Carrie Capitola Aumick Phillips, and I don't have a record yet of any children.  If you are connected, contact me using the form on the right.  His FindaGrave memorial is here (Ancestry -- Theodore B. His twin Isadore Tapp apparently lived in Illinois, married in Indiana, and is buried in Illinois.  She married Wilbur Campbell and had three girls and two boys.  Her FindaGrave memorial is here (Ancestry -- Isadore Tapp, 2018); (Everett, Isadore Tapp Campbell 1932-1917, 2007).

Lincoln runs for his second term as president, with Andrew Johnson as his Vice President.  This is his campaign poster.  Lincoln wins the election, but ....

How would the Tapp family have heard about this news?  Probably telegraph first, with people running around asking each other "have you heard what happened?"  Then more detail through special printed newspapers.  I imagine many were gathered in the telegraph office or whatever gathering place they had to cry, lament and comfort each other.  It probably seemed like the end of the world to them.

According to Wikipedia, the KKK had three different movements, with this being the first iteration.  It flourished in the Southern states, dying out by early 1870s.  It planned to overthrow the Republican state governments in the South, especially by using violence against black leaders.  It is considered, by Wikipedia, as a right-wing extremist organization, with secret membership (Wikipedia -- KKK, 2018).  Another source is https://www.britannica.com/topic/Ku-Klux-Klan

Andrew Johnson becomes the 17th President of the United States

Andrew Johnson was the 17th President of the United States, serving from 1865 to 1869.  Johnson assumed the presidency as he was Vice President at the time of Lincoln's assassination.  He was a Democrat who ran with Republican Lincoln on the National Union ticket.  The new President wanted quick restoration of the seceded states, but his plans did not give protection to the former slaves, he conflicted with the Republican congress and was impeached by the House of Representatives.  He was acquitted in the Senate by one vote (Wikipedia -- Johnson, 2018).  He was born in North Carolina and never attended school, was homeschooled and trained as a tailor.

Brother William Ora Tapp is born, 23 September 1867 in Wyoming, Stark County, Illinois.  Did the family move?  or did county/town lines move?  If you know, let me know using the contact form on the right.  He married Viola Dugan when she was 17 years old, later divorcing her and marrying Anne C. Tapp.  I don't have much more information for him, and I found a Find a Grave memorial but I'm not sure it is his, so I won't include that one here (Ancestry -- William O. Tapp, 2018).  Is he your ancestor?  Give me a heads up!

In other news -- Alaska was just purchased from Russia; Nebraska enters the union as the 37th state.  The Confederation of Canada was formed, Diamonds are discovered in South Africa, and Dynamite was developed (OurTimelines.com, 2018).  

According to the History channel,  US Secretary of STate William H. Seward signs a treaty with Russia (editor sarcasm alert -- would this be Russian collusion?) for the purchase of Alaska for $7 million.  This works out to about 2 cents per acre ... quite a deal!  However, Congress ridiculed him and the press called it "Seward's Folly," "Seward's icebox," and President Andrew Johnson's "polar bear garden" (History -- Alaska, 2018).

Brother Henry A. Tapp was born in Penn, Stark County Illinois, on 23 May 1869 or 1870.  We should find him in the 1870, 1880, 1900 and 1920 censes at least.  But I only found him on the 1870 census, which we will see in the next post (Ancestry -- Henry A. Tapp, 2018).

1869 age 12 President Ulysses S. Grant

1869 President Ulysses S Grant, the 18th president for two terms, from 1869-1877.  He started out as the Commanding General, leading the Union Army to victory over the Confederacy under the supervision of President LIncoln.  During the Reconstruction Era, President Grant led the Republicans in their efforts to remove the vestiges of Confederate nationalism, racism and slavery (Wikipedia -- Ulysses S. Grant, 2018).   
Some interesting things to know about him -- his baptised name was Hiram Ulysses Grant.  The middle initial is fake news, started when a congressman accidentally wrote his name as Ulysses S. Grant when he nominated him to West Point.  The name stuck.  In a letter to his wife in 1844, he joked with her that she should find a name beginning with the letter "S," saying "You know I have an 'S' in my name and I don't know what it stands for" (Andrews, 2015).

"The friend in my adversity I shall always cherish most.  I can better trust those who helped to relieve the gloom of my dark hours than those who are so ready to enjoy with me the sunshine of my prosperity" -- Ulysses S. Grant (Grant, 2018).

In other news -- The Cutty Sark was built; the Suez canal opens; the Trans-continental railroad is completed (OurTimelines.com, 2018)
The Cutty Sark was the last tea clipper built, and was one of the fastest.  The opening of the Suez Canal meant that steamships used a MUCH shorter route to China, so the Cutty Sark spent only a few years on the tea trade before turning to Australian Wool, where she held the record time to Britain for 10 years.  She was eventually sold to Portugese company and renamed Ferreira.  She was then purchased in 1922 and used as a training ship, then transfered to permanent dry dock in 1954 in London.  A National Historic Ship (Wikipedia -- Cutty Sark, 2018)

Joseph Ware Tapp 1857-1924 Part 1 -- 1850s

Before he was born, there were underground railroad leading slaves to freedom.  These ended about 1860 when Joseph was age 3.  Also, Queen Victoria was the monarch of England (OurTimelines.com, 2018).

March 6, just before Joseph Ware Tapp was born, the US Supreme Court decided that Blacks could not be US citizens (OurTimelines.com, 2018).  They decided that slaves living in free states and territories were not free just because of residence, because “he was not considered a person under the US constitution.  In the opinion of the justices, black people were not considered citizens when the Constitution was drafted in 1787 (History.com Editors, 2009).”  This was one catalyst leading to Civil War.

Joseph Ware Tapp was born in Toulon, Stark County Illinois, on May 1^st to Bushrod and Mary Jane Essex Tapp.  I cannot find ANY birth record other than from census records.  I’m not sure there are any birth records available.  His middle name, Ware, came from his grandmother Eleanor Ware, daughter of Scottish-born Robert and Catherine Maxwell Ware.  Joseph was the 6^th child born, with older siblings Sarah Elizabeth, Martha Ellen, George Washington, James Whitfield and Charles Wesley Tapp.  He was smack in the middle of twelve children.

Social things that may have affected the Tapp family include that the Transatlantic cable was started this year  According to Wikipedia,

A transatlantic telegraph cable is an undersea cable running under the Atlantic Ocean used for telegraph communications. The first was laid across the floor of the Atlantic from Telegraph Field, Foilhommerum Bay, Valentia Island in western Ireland to Heart's Content in eastern Newfoundland. The first communications occurred August 16, 1858, reducing the communication time between North America and Europefrom ten days – the time it took to deliver a message by ship – to a matter of minutes. Transatlantic telegraph cables have been replaced by transatlantic telecommunications cables. 

Some other famous men who were born the same year include Lord Baden-Powell who founded Boy Scouts; Clarence Darrow of the Scopes Trial fame; and William H. Taft, President (OurTimelines.com, 2018).
